It might seem a bit discouraging if you are craving to be in a wild space but find yourself in the city with all its sirens, concrete and the busy vibe. Here are a few creative ideas to bring nature to you. Enjoy!
Find a space where you can sit comfortably outdoors. Maybe do this with a partner to feel safe. Once you find your spot, take turns closing your eyes. Really focus on what you hear. Sometimes when we isolate our senses, the ones we call upon kick into overdrive. Try to isolate your focus on one thing, such as bird sounds. Try to tune into the ones that sound closest, then those that seem further away. Each time, isolate your concentration on a very specific objective. As you practice this exercise, you become more and more mindful and can train yourself to focus on a natural element that you choose. It’s fun to practice. Try to listen for a full five minutes then let your partner try.
Plant a window garden if you have a window with good sun exposure. Fresh herbs work really well and are easy to grow. Just snip off a little basil and throw it into your pasta sauce. I have even had luck with sprouting an avocado tree from the seed of a store-bought fruit. I’ve done the same with seeds from cucumbers and tomatoes. Some fruits veggies like pineapple and celery can be grown from putting the stock or base in water. There are so many options, almost anything is possible. With many different cultivation requirements, don’t forget, YouTube and Google are just a click away.
Go to your nearest garden store or nursery and go to the native plant section. These are plants that are native to your area and grow wild. Take pictures then go take a walk in some local open space with your camera and see how many you can identify.
Set out hummingbird feeders or other bird feeders and see what happens. If you are lucky, nature will come to you. A few helpful tips: if trying for hummingbirds, make sure you only use homemade nectar. Try 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. Boil then let cool. Store bought hummingbird solution can be harmful. Make sure to change or clean the feeder often as mold will collect and can also be harmful to the hummers. If you are going for regular birds and plan to buy bird seed, make sure to get the “clean seed” or black sunflower. It’s the good stuff. Birds are picky and will throw the cheap stuff on the ground. Yes, it will also attract wildlife but not birds, think rodents.
Go to the park, beach, or any open space near you and start collecting cool items. You might find cool sticks, beach wood, shells, pinecones, tree bark, colorful leaves, sea glass, flower petals…who knows what you will find. Bring your treasures home and try some nature art. I have made picture frames from fallen tree branches, windchimes from seashells, and even book markers from tree bark and dried flowers. Have at it. Let your imagination flow.
Take your exercise or joyful movement outdoors. Most communities offer yoga in the park, tai chi or even boot camp. Just take a walk in a new neighborhood and stay mindful and aware of the beauty that shows up.
Hope these few tips are helpful. If you try one or have other ideas to add, please share it and your experience!
